Frequently Asked Questions

Lightworld/Darkworld questions

What is Lightword/Darkworld, and are there vampires in it?
Lightworld/Darkworld is a trilogy set in a future where humans have, through the use of magic, torn the veil between the worlds of fantasy and reality, and are forced to share the Earth with creatures from fairytales and nightmares. While vampires do make cameo appearances as denizens of the Darkworld, the central characters of the story are fairies.

I don't like to read a series until all the books are out, so when is the last one coming out?
The books are releasing back-to-back-to-back, October, November, and December of this year, and are already written, so you can buy the first book in October knowing it will not be a long wait between them.

Will there be other books in the Lightworld/Darkworld universe?
The series is finished as it stands, but the possiblity exists that there will be more stories set in that universe in the future.

Blood Ties questions

The Blood Ties series is over! Will you ever write about vampires again?
Yes. I am currently in negotiations to write another vampire book for Mira. However, it will not be connected to the Blood Ties universe.

I love Carrie/Nathan/Cyrus/Ziggy/Dahlia/Max/Other! Will you ever write more stories about her/him/them?
There are no current plans to continue the series.

How could you kill Cyrus? He was my favorite character!
I get this question a lot. Cyrus is not dead. He is never described as dying at the end of the book, though he is badly injured. And honestly, do you really think he'd be permanently dead, anyway?

Where did you get the idea for the series?
I used to work at Borgess Hospital in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Part of my job was to take deceased patients to the morgue, and when I would go down there I would always think of what might happen if one of the patients was a vampire. That eventually became the fight scene at the end of The Turning. Everything else grew from there.

General writing questions

Do you ever base characters on real people?
Yes. Ziggy, Clarence, March (the vampire madam) and Patrick (the vampire hitman intercepted by Bella and Max in book 3) are all modeled after real people to some extent. I also use names of people I know to name minor characters; the jogger killed by Nathan in Ashes to Ashes is named after one of my best friends, and the city and county that are the location of Mouse's church in Possessions are two family names of mine.

Did you always want to be a writer?
No, but more conventional jobs require you to wear pants and show up at certain times.

How did you get involved in writing? Did you know someone who was a writer?
My grandmother, Peggy Hanchar, had something like twenty historical romance novels published in the 80's and 90's, and she encouraged me to write stories from an early age. However, I didn't get a foot in the door because of her experience. I had to build my career from the ground up.

Do you consider yourself a romance author, or an urban fantasy author?
I consider myself an author, and allow other people to categorize me, though I don't believe my books are as romantic as some others are, and I wouldn't want readers to be disappointed if they bought them expecting a romance.

General questions

Will you read my manuscript and tell me what you think about it?
I would be more than happy to read your book... after it's been published and I'm no longer opening myself up to a world of troubles by doing so.

I would love an autographed photo/book plate/bookmark. Can you send me one? Can I send you something to sign?
For safety reasons (you wouldn't believe the number of "real vampires" who contact me via email, and other random nutty folk), I do not give out my address for readers to send me books to have autographed. For time and money reasons, I do not keep items to autograph and send to readers. Your best bet is to show up at a signing or convention, and I will sign just scads of things for you there.

Is it really you on your facebook/twitter/answering fanmail?
Yes, it is really me answer fanmail, watering your Farm Town crops, and twittering instead of working.

I sent you a fan email, but you never responded. What gives?
While I would like to be able to reply personally to every email I receive, sometimes time is tight and I just am not able to. Please know that, due to the marvel of modern technology known as the BlackBerry, I do read each and every fan email I receive.

I am a real vampire. You got a lot of stuff wrong. Would you like me to tell you about it?
No.

I found a typographical error in one of your books. Would you like me to tell you about it?
No.

I tried to add you as a friend on MySpace, and you never added me back! What, too good to be my MySpace friend, are ya?
However, MySpace has not yet removed my page. I'm not ignoring you, I'm just ignoring MySpace.
